Since graduating from university, I have been doing the 9 to 5 none stop.
The only time I remember having a break was when I went on maternity leave for three months with my first child and six months with my second.
As a mother, I strongly felt I should be at home looking after my children, but the reality was different.
This option was denied to me as I had no choice but to return to work and provide for myself and a young family.
I was a single mum with so much debt, hardly surviving on maternity pay I was given.
I juggled motherhood and work for many years as many mothers in a similar situation will do.
There came a point in my life when I questioned everything about my lifestyle.
I worked very hard, yet the money disappeared so quickly, at the end of the month I was always broke.
I did not by any means live beyond my ability.
Just made enough to pay the bills, take care of my immediate families such as my daughters and mum, occasionally I help my extended family and when I can, I contribute to various charities I passionately care about.
I work long hours and hardly see much of my family.
My eldest daughter once complained to me and said “mum all you do is work”, you can imagine how hurt that felt when she said it.
I had to swallow it, she was right in a way, but I had no alternative to give her that I will be home early from now on. I broke so many promises before.
The commute to work is a nightmare as I must make use of public transport. When it is good, life is easier but increasingly it has been getting worse over the years.
I could write a whole book about the miseries my fellow commuters and I face daily.
You never quite know what to expect when you arrive at the train station or how your day will end.
You just have to take it as it comes. By the way, I have been doing this for more than 12 years.
To cut a long story short, I began to look for ways to make extra money to improve my financial situation and quality of life.
I also worked on Saturdays whenever I got the opportunity.
This made me realize it was not sustainable in the long run as it left me with little time for myself and family.
I thought of applying for other jobs and over the years I have been approached by many companies, however, my answer will always be no.
Deep down I knew if I carry on working for other people I will never truly be free.
It is better to struggle now and hustle.
Put a plan in place which will offer me the kind of life I desperately desire to have financial, time and location freedom as well as allowing me to avoid the rat race.
The most precious commodity we all have is time and once is gone we can’t bring it back.
I found myself years were passing me by, getting older but my life remained unfulfilled.
My Turning Point
I knew something had to change.
What I wanted could be achieved If I either work for myself, win the lottery which is unlikely as I don’t do the lottery or inherit lots of money.
I started to explore the possibility of going into business though I had no prior knowledge of running a business be it offline or online.
I am not joking when I say I failed many times.
I took the failures as part of the process of becoming successful.
The most important lesson I learned was never to quit when things don’t go according to plan and I am faced with difficult challenges.
I heard this phrase from somewhere “Quitters are losers and Winners never quit”.
After doing extensive research I chose to start an internet business as it resonated with me better given my circumstances.
This was the beginning of my digital entrepreneurship journey.
Since starting I have never looked back and the rest, as they say, is history.
I took up the e-commerce route which I have been successfully doing it for a few years now.
I continue to explore more opportunities in my journey as a digital entrepreneur.
